Curriculum for Excellence

Why is Scottish education changing?

As times change, education and schools have to adapt to keep up with changes taking place in the world around us. Some of these changes include:

  • Different work opportunities and patterns
  • New technology and growth of the internet
  • Environmental concerns
  • Health issues
  • Increased travel and contact with different cultures, languages and countries

A DVD which was sent out to Parent Councils in August gives a good starting point as to why the Scottish education system is changing.

What do we mean by 'Curriculum'?

The curriculum describes what children and young people do in school.  In primary school it includes the lessons which develop some of their basic skills such as reading, writing and mathematics and in secondary schools, the subject areas (geography, history, languages etc) and the courses which lead to examinations and qualifications.
